Coast Guard officials announced last week that starting at the end of 2022, the Coast Guard will abandon its current combat uniforms and switch to the blue version of the Navy III working uniform.

The new uniform, called the Coast Guard Work Uniform, or CGWU, will be launched at Coast Guard Academy; Cape May Coast Guard Training Center in New Jersey; and other joining points at the end of next year-the first quarter of fiscal year 2023.

According to an announcement issued by Hayes Davis of the Coast Guard Uniform Department on November 10, these uniforms will be available on the Coast Guard Exchange and ShopCGX online later in the 2023 fiscal year, with the goal of completely replacing combat uniforms by 2025. Branch project manager.

According to Davis, after working closely with the Navy to develop and deploy new uniforms, the service plan has been implemented and will be rolled out to the entire fleet starting next year.

But the COVID-19 pandemic has derailed the timetable, leading to the temporary closure of most textile factories in the United States and shifting apparel manufacturers from manufacturing apparel to manufacturing personal protective equipment.

Some Coast Guard members are already familiar with this uniform because it is worn by personnel engaged in maritime law enforcement and port security work or on combat missions with the Navy.

Coast Guard Commander Karl Schultz also wore the prototype when he delivered his annual Coast Guard State of the Country Speech in San Diego in March.

"The use of these uniforms in these specific environments shows that this uniform is very suitable for all Coast Guard missions," Davis said in an article published on the MyCG website. "We have received positive feedback... It makes sense for the Coast Guard to adopt the overall uniform as our new combat uniform."

Two-piece uniforms are unisex. Tops are calculated by bust and shirt length, and pants are calculated by waist and inseam.

Unique features that are not available in current combat uniforms include an ordinary collar that can be quickly converted to combat conditions; a grade label that can be switched after promotion, instead of embroidery that needs to be customized or uniformly replaced; an extra pocket; trousers; and organization Space for patches.

According to Davis, another benefit of this uniform is that it has been deployed by the Navy, which reduces production costs. He said that the money saved will be passed on to the service staff.

Enlisted personnel will see their monthly clothing allowance adjustments in fiscal year 2022 to cover the cost of the new uniforms.

Davis stated that this change will allow members to obtain replacement value before uniforms are available and needed.

The Navy tested blue and khaki versions of the fire-retardant two-piece uniform similar to the new 2019 version of the Coast Guard at the U.S. Fleet Command, but the service continues to use desert or green camouflage type III uniforms, as well as improved fire-retardant Variant coveralls, on board.
